I'm going to start this review with a sort of disclaimer, and that is that a lot of my "problems" with this film are arguably just artistic nuances that don't align with my personal tastes. In terms of historical accuracy, Gohatto is right on the money for everything except the subject it's primarily dealing with.

Cancellation of the 14th New York Film Festival’s public showings of In the Realm of the Senses is another reminder of the Federal Government’s vast powers in the field of obscenity—powers easily overlooked in view of the general, though inaccurate, impression that the Supreme Court has returned control of pornography to the states.

Gohatto is a romantic tale of love between samurai warriors, and given the fact that Oshima, 68, has said of himself "I break taboos, and I'm interested in people and actors who break taboos", this samurai film is unlike anything that has ever proceeded it.

Gohatto is a tragedy of doomed gay love, and while it's not my favorite approach to the subject, I'm also a bit of a miserabilist. I think this depiction works so well for me because it's genuinely effective as a tragedy and never feels manipulative or outright homophobic.

Review: In many respects expectations for Nagisa Oshima's film "Gohatto" were quite high. The director who gave us the infamous "In the Realm of the Senses" returns to his chair behind the camera after a 13 years break and a stroke. The end result is, to put it simply, sobering.

"Gohatto" ("Taboo") is a fascinating film about the danger of beauty : to sum it up, a young "ephebe"'s ethereal beauty spreads like a plague, infecting a whole company of iron hard men in the process.
